Joy will share excerpts from her book and discuss the influence of her great-grandfather, G. Oliver Riggs, a musician and band director in Bemidji. • 11 a.m.: I’m participating in a pre-recorded discussion with four other creative nonfiction and memoir writers, called Writing the Truth, moderated by Rachael Hanel.

• 4 p.m.: I’m participating in a pre-recorded discussion with four other history writers, called Writing History, moderated by Danelle Erickson.

Sunday, Oct. 4:

• 4 p.m.: I’m participating in a live panel discussion with nine other writers, where we’ll answer audience questions about the writing process, the path to publication, and the writing life.

Virtual Author Talk: Joy Riggs

I will discuss Crackerjack Bands and Hometown Boosters:  The Story of a Minnesota Music Man in a virtual event sponsored by the Northfield Public Library. I will read from the book about the life and times of my paternal great grandfather, G. Oliver Riggs, a community band leader in greater Minnesota at the turn of the century. I will also answer questions about the book and my writing process.

I will be one of five writers participating in Carnivals, Cowboys, and Clowns: A Winter Reading by the Fisher Cats, held from 3-4 p.m. at Amore Coffee, 879 Smith Ave. S. West St. Paul. I’ll be reading an excerpt from my book about the time my great-grandfather and members of a Montana Cowboy Band caused a ruckus at the State Capitol during the 1917 St. Paul Winter Carnival.

The event is free. I’ll be selling and signing books afterward.

Book reading/signing, NORTHFIELD

I’ll be reading excerpts from my book at a special event at Little Joy Coffee, 300 Division St. S., in Northfield. Enjoy finger food and specialty coffee drinks, including a Crackerjack-themed drink created just for the event!

Books will be available for purchase on site. I’ll also happily sign copies purchased in advance at Content Bookstore or the Northfield Historical Society’s museum store.
